About Our Synagogue

Our Mission

Congregation Lemaan Achai is dedicated to providing the opportunity for spiritual growth, Jewish education and spiritual comfort for individuals, families, and our community.

Since the rebuilding and the expansion of the Synagogue, our mission has been to afford a more comfortable place to Daven and Learn. The beautiful Shul has become a place for so many in the community to come and daven with comfort and enthusiasm. Most of the main Sepharim are avaible for all levels of learning.

One of the main missions has been to establish a dynamic, nightly Gemara Shiur for everyone; Baale Batim and the learned alike, to have a Kviut BaTorah everyday. Baruch HAshem, it has become a succes as the Shiur has over twently regulars. We have completed multiple Masechtot with inspirational, festive Siyumim!

The most important objective of our mission is to create a warm and growing atmosphere for the young of the generation. Be it they are in Yeshiva or working, to come together and daven, learn, have oneg shabbat all under one roof. It has been incredibe to see the young come together and have a Second Minyan on Shabbat Shachrit. About 30 young guys and young fathers join togather to pray in a special, separate setting just for them.

Our Background and History

In 1984, Rabbi Shlomo Chai Niyazov founded Kahal Lmaan Achai, the first synagogue in Brooklyn for Bukharian Jews. The Synagogue has been serving the Bukharian Jewish community in Borough Park for close to 40 years now. Rabbi Niazov has put his heart and soul into the community for decades. From its inception, with only a few families attending, the synagogue has now grown into a thriving community of hundreds throughout Borough Park and Kensigton.

In September of 2019 the Synagogue expanded its property size by double and rebuilt a magnificent spacious Beit Knesset/Bet Midrash. This came into fruition due to the tireless efforts of committed individuals such as the President, Mr. Yaakov Dayan and the main Gabbai, Rabbi Asher Cohen, among others.

As the Shul was rebuilt, and due to the unfortunate health condition of Rabbi Niazov, the community leaders requested Rabbi Eliyahu David Haimof to help lead and revive the community, specifically the youth of the community. After seeing that there are many frum Bukharian Baalei Batim, youth, and children in the community in need of a leader, Rabbi Haimof with the advice and the blessings of his Rosh HaYeshiva, Rav Yisroel Reisman, undertook the mission to lead the community. Rabbi Haimof is a Musmach of Rabbi Yisroel Belsky zt’l and is still learning full time in Kolel Torah Vadaat.

At the outset of his leadership he began a Gemara Shiur in the evenings with only a few attending. Within months, it began growing expanding with each year, reaching close to 20 people nightly. Almost every year there is another beautiful Siyum made, such as Masechtot Sota, Pesachim, Sanhedrin and Ketubot, after learning it diligently and including some Rashis. Recently, the large Chabura began learning Masechet Bava Metzia. Among the learners there were some that have finished Masechtot for the first time in their lives. Aldo those that have a Yeshiva background, the style of teaching has been reaching many levels BeSiata DeShamaya. Rav Haimof is very proud of his committed Chabura and the level of learning Torah they have reached. The chabura has made beautiful Siyumim with Hashuva Rabbonim attending in awe and inspiring us to continue the accomplishments.

Many of the youth of our community that attend mainstream Yeshivot, have even expressed how ecstatic they are that our Shul has become a true Makom Torah.

We also have daily Tefilot for Shacharit and on Sunday two Minyanim, daily Mincha, and two minyanim for Arvit. We have beautiful Shabbatot with Inspirational Chazanut and intriguing Divrei Torah.

We have an entire Shiur on practical Laws Shabbat every Shabbat afternoon for an hour and fifteen minutes. Covering each Siman from Shulchan Aruch, with Mishna Brurah and halacha Lemaase for Sephardim from leading Sephardi Poskim, mainly Chacham Ovadia zt’l. In the winter season we have Learning/Oneg Shabbat on Friday nights from 8:30 to 10pm for men and women with refreshments, including Cholent and Kugel, Zemirot Shabbat and inspirational Divrei Torah on the Parsha with valuable and lasting lessons. This Oneg Shabbat has become tremendously popular and has attracted dozens of youth besides for men women and children.

We have started a successful Avot Ubanim program where fathers and sons can bond through the beauty of learning. The Avot Ubanim has encouraged many mothers to send their sons and husbands to learn together. The amazing prizes and the delicious Melave Malka has definitely been a great motivation as well. Our yearly Chanukah Party for the children of the community has been incredible with some amazing Torah shows. We had our first Purim Kolel which was filled with Avrechim and Bachurim from different Yeshivot, the Bet Midrash was filled with vibrant sounds of Kol Torah. We followed it with a second one the following year which was even bigger and more inspiring.

Recently, we have also started a second Shacharit Minyan for the youth on Shabbat morning. Enjoying a separate, large room with brand new chumashim, siddurim, talitot etc, with a separate entrance. The youth minyan is followed by a Kiddush every Shabbat. This Second Minyan has attracted many young people. The very first Shabbat there were 40 young guys and young fathers with their sons. It was a massive success and has been going strong since, with an average of 30 guys every Shabbat.

Rabbi Haimof has developed a warm relationship with the youth of the community. He and his Rabbanit have been so hospitable to the families of the community, inviting them for Shabbatot and Yamim Tovim. In particular, Rabbi Haimof is always available for the community throughout the day and week. Especially for the youth, who have been in need of someone young and knowledgeable in Torah, and one who understands the needs and challenges of today's generation.

In order to continue this wonderful, fulfilling and successful growth of our Shul, and the community at large, we need the financial support of caring individuals. Individuals who want to be part of this transformation that the Bucharian community have been yearning for, and now finally experiencing. In contributing to our Shul you will have the Zechut to be part of raising the next generation of Beni Torah and Bnot Israel of our community that will strengthen the Bucharian community at large. With Hashem's help, may we all continue to grow and serve Hashem with utmost dedication and peace of mind.
